The Philadelphia Examiner has an article today about a speech made by Indiana Governor, Mitch Daniels. Daniels evidently believes that the Republican Party needs to let go of Reagan Conservatism. Here is a quote from the article itself:
“Nostalgia is fine and Reagan’s economic plan was good,” Daniels said. “But we need to look towards the future rather than staying in the past.” Daniels added that the GOP needed to work on uniting behind Sen. John McCain instead of constantly comparing the Arizona senator with the Gipper.”
This sounds like Daniels is giving up on being truly conservative. The Republican Party seems to be ready to settle, which is evident by the mere fact that John McCain has won the nomination! Daniels suggests that we need to all rally behind McCain, but that really doesn’t solve the problems that exist in the Republican Party.
The Republican Party has been settling since the time of Ronald Reagan. I think George Bush has been a good president in many ways, but his fiscal policies have left a lot to be desired. So, should we “get over” Ronald Reagan, or get back to Ronald Reagan? It would be great if someone would step up and follow in the mold of Ronald Reagan. Remember how Reagan won by huge margins? That’s what happens when there is real hope, and real solutions. That was real change! Now, we have neither. McCain will simply follow along with the current Bush administration fiscal plans, which means giving in to the liberals at every turn.
No offense, Governor Daniels, but I think I’ll save my support for someone worthy of it.
